Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon

On our last day in town, lil' sis and I met up with cousin T again for lunch at Le Bistro Montage, located literally underneath the Morrison Street bridge. See? Bridge right VVV there.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 1

On the whole, I find the New Orleans-style entrees to be just OK, but I don't really come here for that.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 2

I go for the oyster shooters and mac and cheese. That seems strange to go to a restaurant just for basically one dish and one appetizer, but hey, they're good.

Make sure you save some for leftovers. Because the other reason I go here is for the way the waitstaff craftily folds those leftovers inside foil animals.

And lastly, I go here because Montage is open late, handy when half my party wants to drink and the other half is underage.

But since we were meeting cousin T for lunch, much too early for drinks.

Lil' sis and I ordered oyster shooters, $1.75 with Cajun cocktail sauce, horseradish, and a lemon.

Cousin T and I ordered the "spold" mac and cheese with chicken, a combination of their old and spicy versions, $6.95. The old mac and cheese contains garlic, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese. The spicy mac and cheese has Cajun gravy, jalapenos, tomatoes, and Parmesan cheese. Good old comfort food, kicked up a notch.

Lil' sis got the pesto mac with chicken, $6.95 basil pesto, Parmesan cheese, and tomatoes.

We could have easily finished our entrees but we saved some for leftovers just so we could have this!

Leftovers wrapped inside a foil cat and mouse.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 6

Yes, I'm still a kid and get inordinate pleasure in seeing what shape my leftovers will come out in.

Once, I even saw a foil Superman, with upraised arms as if in flight and foil cape. And another time, a little kid gasped with delight when he got a foil sword that was longer than his arm.

We also got an Oreo pie for dessert.

Then we waved bye to cousin T before doing a quick run to Powell's City of Books so lil' sis could pick up the next book in the Twilight saga to read on the plane.

May 20, 2010 update:

A year later, in September 2009, I was back again at Montage with my brother, lil' sis, and our second-oldest and second-youngest nephews.

Second-youngest nephew and I caught up while the others went into the bar next door to check out the selection of beers.

Look! A waitress folding a super tall cat.

Dinner prices are more than lunch prices. We weren't really hungry, just looking for a place to hang out with the nephews.

Complimentary bread.

The salad that came with the entrees.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 10

Even though I think their entrees are just OK, I couldn't resist ordering the chicken fried steak with country gravy, which came with cornbread, red beans, and rice, $11.25. Just OK. Should've known better, yet, I'm always trying to find that perfect chicken fried steak anyway.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 11

Second-youngest nephew ordered the buttermilk fried chicken $11.25. I think my fried chicken is way better. Too dry.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 12

Second-oldest nephew ordered the blackened catfish $13.50.

Day 5.1 Le Bistro Montage - Portland - Oregon 13

But the food was beside the point.

Few places in Portland are open late at night where I can take the under-21-year-olds, so we usually default to Montage.

Plus, creatively-wrapped foil animals! :P

  1. I order oyster shooters here too! Though I can hardly ever stop at just one - and have to have a shot of good vodka on the side. I'm partial to the SPAM mac n cheese myself. I've had lots of good times at the Montage!

  2. hi wc - those foil animals are too cute!!!! gladstone's in malibu does them too, i believe.

your country fried chicken looked pretty good, although i would have the gravy separate because i don't like my crunchy food to get soggy!

  4. Cheese Plate SF,
I'd make a whole meal of oysters if they weren't so darn expensive.

    CC,
I think TC would like the foil animals. All kids (and some adults :P) do!

    Anna,
So sad you're gone, but now I have someone else to hang out with when I go home!
