Latourell Falls (Winter) - Columbia River Gorge - Oregon

8 Latourell Falls (Winter) - Columbia River Gorge - Oregon 1

I always save my favorite waterfall for last.

I've blogged Latourell Falls before, that post has video if you want to hear and get another sense of the water. During the summer though, the waterfall is almost a trickle in comparison to the sheer power cascading down this day after a series of recent rainstorms.

Another bridge.

See? It's so pretty from far away, then the trail starts beside the bridge, and the awesome florescent lichen just calls out for attention.

It was still lightly drizzling and the spray from the waterfall was more powerful than I've ever experienced before. I couldn't get as close as I normally can.

More random mini waterfalls because the ground was so saturated.

Stinging nettles. I brushed against nettles once in Scotland and it was so painful.

The other reason why I like Latourell Falls is because during the spring, I often encounter bleeding hearts growing along the trail. It's still too early for that though.

And of course, no visit to the gorge is complete without a final stop at Crown Point Vista House to see over the whole area.

  1. hi wc - that was the first waterfall we saw on our trip 2 years ago! we'd never seen real waterfalls until then. oregon is such a beautiful state! we also went to crown point vista house - enjoyed the amazing views of the gorge! of course, the twilight fan in me wanted to see the view that was seen briefly in the movie trailer! ha ha.

  2. CC,
I like saving Latourell for last. But I guess going from west to east, you can save Multnomah Falls for last. :)
