UCC Cafe Plaza - Walnut (Closed)

After dinner at Ong Ga Nae Korean BBQ - Rowland Heights, we literally went across the street to UCC Cafe Plaza in Walnut for dessert. The UCC, which stands for Ueshima Coffee Company, is a pretty nice Japanese cafe located in a strip mall that also sells Rolex and Cartier. Pretty nice indeed!

The first time I visited was back in November 2007. My dining companion and I had seen the many, many photos that CrazyPooh had uploaded onto Biggest Menu and wanted to check it out. Leather sofas. Quite a step up from the normal coffee shop.

He ordered a chicken and mushroom pasta? I think? It's been a long time. It could have been the bacon mushroom sausage spaghetti? Chili garlic chicken spaghetti? Anyway, the pastas are around $9.95.

Since it was in the late afternoon, I opted for the afternoon tea snack set of chocolate French toast cubes with the house coffee for $5.99. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and from 9 p.m. to closing, for $5.99 or $6.99, you get a dessert or savory snack and coffee or tea. Good deal!

He opted to get a $5.99 afternoon set for dessert too since it was only a few dollars more on top of the coffee price. The cinnamon harumaki is basically a fried cheesecake inside an eggroll, served with vanilla ice cream, and dusted with cinnamon. The cheesecake was pretty light and the crispy eggroll was the perfect foil.

But the best part was watching the coffee get made.

They look like a science experiment, yeah?

The siphon coffee leaves the grounds on top, while the coffee brews cleanly below.

Here, you can see it better than I can explain it in my YouTube video.

I told my brother and cousin Q about it, so they wanted to try it after our dinner at Ong Ga Nae.

I just love the look of the coffee pot. Oh yeah, Wedgwood cutlery too. I told you it was a pretty nice coffee shop!

The coffee itself doesn't taste anything special to me. Even though the coffee beans come from the Ueshima Coffee Company's various plantations around the world. But then, I'm not a coffee connoisseur.

We ordered the fruity harumaki for dessert. The cheesecake eggroll with vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit.

There's weekend breakfast set deals and dinner deals that include three courses and drinks for around $15. Too bad it's just so far from me or I might be tempted too often.

Technically, this location is still open and you can still get everything here for around the same prices. But they changed their name to Aoyama Cafe, so that'll have to wait for a separate post when I get around to it. :P
