Fried Rice with Apples and Cubed Beef

Fried Rice with Apples and Beef 1

Yes, it sounds a little weird. I thought so too when I encountered fried rice with apples and beef on the menu at Bon Marche Bistro/B Village Cuisine - Monterey Park. But I ordered it out of curiosity and it was seriously good.

Apples aren't too sweet and when charred, added a nice contrast to the beef. Hey, if pork chops and applesauce can be paired together, why not apples and beef?

Besides, it's Weekend Wokking time again! Graziana of Erbe in Cucina (Cooking with Herbs), host of the cabbage roundup with 10 recipes, chose APPLES as this month's secret ingredient challenge. I could have done something sweet, but I figured there'd be plenty of those recipes.

Fried Rice with Apples and Beef 2

Fried Rice with Apples and Cubed Beef
Inspired by Bon Marche Bistro/B Village Cuisine - Monterey Park

You'll need:
2 cups day-old rice, or cook a batch of fresh rice and decrease the water by about half a cup
1/4 lb cubed beef
1 red apple, cubed
3 eggs, scrambled or use my scrambled egg omelet technique
Soy sauce or oyster sauce to taste
1/4 tsp salt

Cube the beef first. Add 1/4 tsp salt and set aside so it has a few minutes to marinate.

Then cube the apple.

Make the scrambled eggs first if you wish. Set aside.

Turn the heat on to high because everything will cook very quickly in the wok. Saute the apples first so they develop a nice char. Then add the beef.

Or if you don't want to cook the eggs first, move the apples and beef to the outside of the pan, and add beaten scrambled eggs into the center.

Mix thoroughly. Add rice and stir again.

Add soy sauce or oyster sauce to taste.

And there you have it, fried rice with apples and beef.

Enjoy!

  2. Definitely something interesting! Never have tried the combination ever of apples and beef, let alone apples and pork. I like the depth of field in the apple photo.

This time I remember the 1 year ago post but not the 2 or 3 year ago post. :(

  5. David,
I had never seen it prior to my visit to B restaurant either.

    ETE,
Peter Brady! Pork chops and applesauce, in a Humphry Bogart inflection. :) Ah, I just made turkey tetrazzini again out of my leftovers to re-do that post too.

    Actors Diet,
    It's pretty good!

    Weezer Monkey,
Yup! Now, if I can only get around to posting about Three Apples/Hello Kitty, it would make more sense.

  6. Whoa, the new photos make the dish look so expensive and FANCY. :) Where is the old photo now? Did not see it when I opened up the post.

Been trying out more places with different lighting to see if my lighting can make the photos better but not that much so far. Do you take your photos in your kitchen or somewhere else? I do know my kitchen makes the photos yellow a lot if I do not adjust the white balance.

  7. That's a nice looking bowl of fried rice. Wouldn't have thought of the apple/beef combination myself, but it sounds good. Actually, I find fresh water chestnuts are almost as sweet as apples.

  9. ETE,
Of the finished dish? All old photos. The only new picture was of the apples. :P I usually just shoot in my kitchen whenever I'm done cooking so sometimes the lighting is good, other times it's overhead florescent.

    Sijeleng,
I wouldn't have either! I think chestnuts are a great variation.

    Mom Gateway,
    Thank YOU for hosting!
