After picking me up from the airport, she chose a Mexican restaurant that came recommended for us to try. Except it was closed on weekends. What kind of restaurant closes on weekends?!
So I flipped through my guidebooks and settled on Sadie's of New Mexico, known for its stuffed sopaipillas.
Despite being such a large restaurant, we still had to wait about 20 minutes before getting seated.
We had to order a taco burger because umm, hello, it's a taco burger!
The $6.25 taco burger was about a foot long, served on a large corn tortilla, with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and red or green chile on the side. You can't really see how huge it was in this picture, but it was literally a foot long because that platter was huge. We split it in half and it was still pretty sizable. It also just tasted like an unseasoned taco.
Sadie's also boasts the world's largest stuffed sopaipillas. I think we just got an ordinary stuffed sopaipilla, which was still the size of the platter.
We opted to get ours stuffed with carne adovada, $13.95. The carne adovada was heavenly and described as "lean tender pork cubes marinated in red chile and baked slowly to perfection." I'm not sure how to describe the marinade. It's not like any Mexican food I've had before. Just order it. Trust me. Even later that night as leftovers it was still tasty.
We also got complimentary sopaipillas for dessert.
Which Gourmet Pigs said she had been eating plenty of while she was in New Mexico. We drizzled honey over the sopaipillas before digging in.
So far, a great introduction to New Mexico. Well, except for the kid dining nearby who decided it'd be amusing to throw his fork at our table.

We like Sadies a lot for great family style NM food. Everyone goes there. Our other favorite is Duran's Pharmacy is old town ABQ. It is an old pharmacy with a lunch counter like they used to have all over. Huge handmade buttered tortillas. Order the enchiladas Christmas style. Red and Green chile.
ReplyDeletehi wc - ooh, those sopaipillas with honey!!! they look like heavenly pillows of fried goodness! and yes, adovada is so good!
ReplyDeleteJeff,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! I'll definitely have to try it next time I'm in Albuquerque.
CC,
Now I'm really craving sopaipillas and carne adovada. Bamboodles used to make soapipillas for $1. I'd eat them with condensed milk. Sadly, the restaurant closed down. :(
Wow, good memory! I don't even remember the restaurant we originally were going to go to. Do you remember the name?
ReplyDeleteGP,
ReplyDeleteWas it Padilla's? Mexican food?
