On her list of things she wanted to do in Oregon, eating at Bunk Sandwiches - Portland was #1. Second was going wine tasting. Since were going to be on that side of the river for the wineries, we also met up with my cousin T and baby M3 at Thirsty Lion Pub and Grill in Tigard, a restaurant my cousin had been wanting to try.
GP was a little weirded out that my cousin wanted to meet us at a pub with her baby, but I reassured her that Portland pubs are very family-friendly, leaning more toward restaurants than bars actually.
We got there at 11 a.m. since we wanted to hit up as many wineries as possible along the 99W corridor. The pub was pretty empty when we sat down.
An hour later and it was doing brisk business.
My cousin came prepared with food and placemat for her baby. See? The restaurant has highchairs. As I said, more like a restaurant, that just happens to have a selection of beers. Fifty-two beers on tap to be exact.
There's even a kid's menu and crayons. Can't get more family-friendly than that.
Aww. So cute!
Since none of us were ordering beer that early in the day, I compromised with an oven-baked soft pretzel with hefeweizen beer fondue dipping sauce, $9.95. The hefeweizen flavor wasn't too pronounced, just a nice mild hint to pair with the cheese. Much tastier than I expected. I only wished they left the pretzel intact since the whole fun of a pretzel is ripping it apart.
Scotch eggs, hard-boiled eggs wrapped in pork sausage, lightly breaded and crispy fried, $5.95.
Surprisingly, despite the layer of meat and breading, the Scotch eggs were quite light and not greasy at all. So far, the pub fare has been quite good.
NW Pub Burger, 1/2-lb USDA choice lean ground beef, blue cheese-stuffed burger with grilled sweet onion, maple pepper bacon, white cheddar, arugula, and horseradish cream, $11.95. Just look at it! Even split three ways, this burger was so juicy and satisfying. We chose a side of fries instead of Napa slaw or the house salad.
I'm a sucker for a Reuben Sandwich and when I saw it on the menu, just couldn't resist ordering one. Classic Reuben, beer-braised corned beef brisket, peppered sauerkraut, Gruyer Swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing on rustic rye bread, $11.95. You know, I wax poetic about Kenny & Zuke's Delicatessen's pastrami, but the thinly sliced and beer-braised corned beef was so amazing.
Baby M3's cheese pizza, $4.95.
She was too distracted with her surroundings though to really eat.
She looks so much like my cousin when she was a baby.
And even though we were stuffed, I just couldn't resist ordering dessert. Northwest blackberry cobbler, orange shortbread crust, warm blackberry filling, and vanilla ice cream, $5.95.
The orange shortbread was so yummy. Looove blackberries. Just my kind of dessert.
Anyway, as if you couldn't tell, loved everything I ate at Thirsty Lion. Good choice cousin T! We sent her off with the leftovers and made our way to the first winery on GP's list.
