A Bird in the Bush is Worth Two in the Hand?

Errr, well, because I obviously don't have one bird in the hand to have two in the bush. :P Or should I have called this a pigeon(?) in a camellia tree? I don't know if I want two turtle doves?

In all seriousness, does anyone know what kind of bird I've got in my tree?

A Bird in the Bush is Worth Two in the Hand?

Occasionally when I water my plants I also spray the leaves on the trees to clean them. One such time, a bird literally flew out of my camellia tree. Odd. That's never happened before.

Then the next time I watered my plants, again a bird flew out.

OK, I'm a little slow. So I finally peered inside the tree and what do I see but a bird sitting on a nest. Are there eggs? Don't birds hatch in the spring? I haven't the heart to spray the tree again to see. Except for the two times that I accidentally sprayed water on the bird, it has sat in that same exact spot. Through triple digit temperatures. I don't even know if it leaves to get food.

Still waiting. The bird waiting for its eggs to hatch. Me waiting to see what happens. Will you wait with us?

  2. That, my dear is a common dove, you'll sometimes hear them softly "cooing", they'll nest around your home and have 2 eggs at a time.

They are gentle birds, no harm and a joy to watch.

  3. Also known as a Mourning Dove because of the sound they make. They can have up to 6 broods a year, if weather permitting. The eggs should hatch in about two weeks.

  4. That is so pretty- great photo! And the bird didn't fly away. When I tried to take a photo of a squirrel, it just ran away from me!

  6. Ning,
She's been there for almost the whole month of June so I don't know.

    Peter,
Thanks for identifying her. She is very, very gentle indeed. I like peeking in just to see her.

    Heather,
Thanks for the info. I didn't know birds hatched several times a year.

    WSL98787,
She's staying still because she's guarding her eggs. :)

    Hedgehog,
The consensus seems to be a dove.

    Sis,
Everyone keeps mentioning a sound but I haven't heard her coo at all. :(
