Penny 1

My parents' other chihuahua, Penny, passed away today. She was almost 15 years old. :(

When I was home last November she was still mourning the loss of her brother, Sebastien, last August. She cried herself to sleep each night. It was the saddest sound in the world.

I'm not much of a pet person, but Penny and Sebastien were the sweetest little dogs anyone could ask for.

Sebastien was the more placid one, while Penny was the daring sibling. Eight years ago when my parents had moved and the fence hadn't been built yet, my dad made a pen so they could run around outside. It was only about two feet high because he figured that was at least four times their height. Lo and behold, we caught Penny literally scaling that fence, one paw atop each opening. She thought she was so clever, obviously so since she outsmarted my dad. Ha!

Another time, a tarp had fallen over the picnic table that was in the pen. So she just climbed that tarp and jumped outside. Poor Sebastien was left behind so he kept howling and howling. I came downstairs to see why he was making such a fuss and discovered her gone. But frantic shouts of her name and she willingly came home.

As they got older though, they were content to just plod around at home.

Penny 2

I'll always think of Penny and Sebastien so happy together in my parents' garden.

Day 2 Mom's and Dad's Garden 35

Going home just won't be the same without them.

  1. Though the passing of a pet is sad, take comfort in knowing everybody's time on this planet is limited and from the experiences you shared, their time was happy and fulfilling thanks to you and your parents. My dogs are approaching the end of their lifespans too and when the time inevitably comes, I will only be able to cope knowing that together, we had a great time.

  2. Please give my heartfelt sympathy to your parents.

  3. i'm so sorry chi wc. hugs to you!

  4. My condolences to you and your parents for the passing of your two precious dogs. My retriever chow mix is 13 and I hate the thought of him coming to end of life soon. with luck I have a few more years to make the most of it with him.

  5. I am sorry about Penny. I am sure your parents will miss her a lot. She and her brother were certainly so cute! I always love dogs. "My" Cody will be 18 years old this April. So I don't think he'll be with us very long :(

  6. I'm sorry to hear about Penny passing. Just remember that now she is with Sebastian enjoying many more days. I know it won't be long before my Bebe will be there with them.

  7. i'm so sorry to hear about your parents dogs passing..i have 3 dogs of my own that i love and i can't imagine what it would be like without them..

  8. Vuthy,
It's so hard. I don't think I could get another pet and have to go through their deaths too.

    La Takahashi,
    Thank you.

Thank you. Enjoy the years with your dog. Even knowing they're getting old, it's still tough to see them go.

    Co Toan,
    Thank you. 18! That's a long time.

Thank you. She was so sad with Sebastien gone.

    Thank you.

  9. Condolences to you and your family. As a friend once told me... pets have short lives because we people are the strong ones and we can withstand the loss, so that we can continue to take care of more pets in our lives; this is what they would want.

  10. Poor Penny. Poor parents who surely miss their canine companions. I remember your tribute to Sebastien and how Penny would grieve. I've missed your posts and hope your year is getting better. Every time I pass by the green swords of crocosmias, I think of you.

  11. Ah, I'm sorry for your loss of a loved pet. This post caught my attention as when I was a young girl we also had a Chihuahua named Penny...same coloring and she was about the same age when she passed. On a happier note, this is my first visit to your blog...I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some of the delish looking recipes. Would love to have you drop by Along the way

  12. Wendy,
You know, I'm really not much of a pet person, but I quickly became attached to these two. I don't know if I could handle getting a new pet every other decade. That would hurt too much.

Awww. I know you know what it's like to lose a pet. I think of you when I see my roses too.

What a coincidence! We named her because her coat looked like a copper penny. Guess that's not too original then, huh?

  13. I'm sorry for your loss...they sounded so sweet :(
I have a pair or chihuahua sisters that have a similar dynamic to the one you describe.
Thank you for sharing their photos and stories.

  14. 5 o'clock tsp,
Thank you. The last visit home earlier this month was bittersweet. No doggies running around. :(
