After brunch at Random Order Coffeehouse and Bakery - Portland - Oregon, Gourmet Pigs and I decided to get some work done at Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

Of course, I insisted that it be at their original location on Division Street.

By dad fixes their delivery trucks. So whenever they drop off and pick up a truck, they also drop off a pound of coffee. Sometimes it's whole beans. Sometimes it's pre-ground. Sometimes, if it's a thoughtful person, he or she asks my parents what kind of coffeemaker they have and give them the correct grind. To my dad, Stumptown is just the coffee shop down the street.

To coffee connoisseurs, however, Stumptown is revolutionary or fantastic or whatever other adjectives you'd wish to use.

The area has changed quite a bit over the past several decades, becoming quite trendy even. The much-lauded Pok Pok - Portland - Oregon is just down the street.

We both ordered cappuccinos.

And with free WiFi, sat and worked for a few hours.

I'm not a connoisseur, but I do appreciate a good coffee.

By the way, you know why it's called Stumptown, don't you?

That's Portland's nickname.

Back when the pioneers cleared the land so they could settle, there were so many tree stumps that Portland was called "stumptown."

You also know how Portland got its name, right?

Coin toss.

Really.

In 1845, Francis Pettygrove, from Portland, Maine, and Asa Lovejoy, from Boston, Massachusetts, could not agree on a name for the town that was being platted out on their claim.

So they tossed a coin.

And that's how Portland got its name.

There's also the story about a war that was almost started because of a pig, but that's enough Oregonian trivia for one post. :)
