Fleur De Lys Patisserie - Monterey Park (Closed)

Fleur De Lys Patisserie - Monterey Park 1

Lil' sis, our oldest nephew, and his childhood friend came into town recently to visit my brother's new baby. While I was having brunch at Mike and Anne's Restaurant | Bar - South Pasadena, lil' sis took them to Pho Filet Vietnamese Restaurant - South El Monte for breakfast, so they were still pretty full after our visit. Nephew's friend asked if I could take them out for dessert instead.

I finally noticed Fleur De Lys Patisserie had taken over the old hair salon or was it a realtor's office? The sign, cute awning, very French. And located in Monterey Park definitely made it a must-visit place for me.

The obligatory cute tarts.

We got a kahlua coffee creme brulee for $3.50, lemon poppyseed madeleines for 65 cents, and a red velvet cupcake for $2.95. Everything was divine! I normally don't think madeleines are anything special. Other versions I've tried tasted like cake to me and ya'll know I'm a pie person, but these were slightly crispy on the outside and were just so good.

I love the play of late afternoon light on our table. And the use of Spega yogurt jars as vases since I do that too. Yes, there are shadows in these pictures. With all the focus on well-lit food photos, I think people should appreciate shadows too. Forget light! Embrace shadows! Don't the shadows give the nicest ambiance?

We also ordered the weekend only special of beignets for $4.35. I had been warned. Cousin Q had tried them before and he said they were much too dense, and indeed they were. A little burnt too. Heck, my faux beignets are way better. Nephew's friend had wanted to place two orders, but I suggested just one to see whether we'd like them. This was the only thing I didn't like at Fleur De Lys.

Free refills on the $1.75 house blend coffee though!

The boys decided they wanted more food and got a cheese scone.

Gorilla bread for $3. Like monkey bread, but made with croissant dough and cream cheese. OMG! So decadent and so good. More madeleines! I told you these were not your ordinary madeleines.

Even the back entrance is cute.

A few days ago, I was back again. My third-cousins had come up from Orange County to visit their cousin's new baby (So many babies being born all at once in the family!). After dim sum at Lunasia Chinese Cuisine - Alhambra, I asked if they wanted dessert.

The pastries in the display case were different this time, but they always seem to have chocolate croissants and red velvet cupcakes on hand.

We ordered fresh-squeezed lemonades and a chocolate croissant, a German chocolate chip/pecan/coconut cookie, banana chocolate chip creme brulee, and more madeleines. This time, the madeleines weren't as good. :( They just tasted like cake, like other madeleines I've eaten before. But everything else was sooo divine again! Best chocolate croissant ever! So buttery with big chocolate chunks. The cookie was awesome! And the banana creme brulee had chocolate chunks on the bottom.

My cousin was so charmed by Fleur De Lys.

So cute! Great ambiance. Great pastries. And free Wi-Fi too!

Who else ate at Fleur De Lys Patisserie?
Tony of SinoSoul even ventured to try their red velvet cupcakes and liked it.

  3. DG,
You should! It's so cute & the pastries are really good.

    WeeMo,
I don't know of any good beignet places, but the sopaipillas at Bamboodles are good and cheap!

  5. Love the tables, pastries, and flowers. So cute.

Shadows provide interest to a photo! If it's just direct light e.g. direct flash it is just boring as everything just feels flat. :)

  6. It makes me sad when places are so really darling and cute, but the food doesn't measures up. How refreshing that things are awesome all around here!

  8. Hey WC,

I know this is unrelated to your post but I think you would like to know that in your crockpot bo kho post you had put 1 tbsp annetto seed in the list of ingredients, but within your post, it stated 2 tbsp. I noticed it because I'm making it today. :D

    Btw, the pastries look scrumptious!

  9. Mary,
One of the benefits of living in SoCal and why it's hard for me to go home. :)

    ETE,
Oh I don't mean direct flash. But all the food blogs are constantly emphasizing well-lit photos. What's wrong with some shadows and to show mood?

    Marie,
Except for those dense beignets, everything is just so cute!

    Zen Chef,
Only if you can send me your gateau Basque through the internet. :P

    Diana,
Thanks for pointing it out. I corrected the error.

  10. The cannele definitely are not as beautiful as mine. Bet they skimped on the right molds. ;)

  11. DP,
Never had your canneles so I wouldn't know. Ha!
