Fried Onion Strings

Fried Onion Strings 9

After eating Fried Onion Strings at Gus's BBQ - South Pasadena, I was reminded that I never blogged my recipe. Just one of those basic recipes that slipped through the cracks because it wasn't anything particularly special. Then again, the last time I made this, my cousin's cousin's kids were over and they gobbled up all of the fried onion strings.

They make a great snack, dipped in either ketchup or ranch dressing, or as a garnish atop steak. Eat them fast though because they don't keep well and get soggy quickly.

Ready for some vintage photos from March 2008? Of course I had to make these again for a newer and better photo, but the rest of this set, let's just say I'm glad my photography has improved. They still tasted just as good before though!

If you've made my Southern Fried Chicken, then you can make this.

Fried Onion Strings

For a whole bunch of garnishing or a snack for two, you'll need:
1 large onion, sliced in half length-wise and then about 1/4-inch thick
1 to 2 cups milk
1 egg
1 to 2 cups flour
1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
1 tsp Hungarian paprika
1/2 Salt
1/2 Ground black pepper
Oil for deep-frying

Cut the ends off an onion, then length-wise, then in 1/4-inch thick slices. In a large bowl, add beat one egg into 1 cup milk. Add the onion slices. If needed, add up to another cup of milk to make sure the onion slices are covered. Let rest for about 15 minutes to let the milk help neutralize some of the strong odors of the onion.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, add about 1 cup flour, 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning, 1 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp ground black pepper. Toss to evenly mix.

Add oil to frying pan or wok and turn heat to medium-high.

Add a handful of the onion slices into the flour mixture.

Toss to make sure the onions are evenly coated. I find one coating is sufficient, but you can do two coatings if you want a thicker crust.

When the oil is hot, deep-fry in batches until the onion strings are golden.

Drain the onion strings and serve.

You can serve them as a garnish atop steak.

Or just eat them as a snack dipped in ketchup or ranch dressing.

Enjoy!
