No Turtle Doves, Agapanthus, Desert Rose, Gardenia, and Jasmine

Since I really don't have a garden anymore, here's what was growing on my front porch back in July. I totally forgot to update ya'll on the mourning dove, also called a turtle dove like in the Christmas song. Remember when I showed you the bird in the bush?

Well, the bird did eventually leave the nest and I managed to catch a photo of the egg. And then...nothing! The bird disappeared for a week and the egg stayed unopened. Then the egg disappeared completely too. I don't know what happened! :(

My agapanthus. Too much green and not enough flower for me, but they're still nice while they last.

The desert rose that I brought back from Vietnam three years ago as a small cutting.

The very first bloom from my gardenia. I bought it three years ago. In my old garden the leaves turned yellow and it struggled to bloom. I don't know if it was the sunny spot or the hard-packed clay soil. I dug it up recently and brought it to my new place. It's still in a temporary plastic container, but the leaves are now glossy green and I managed to get a few blooms. Will have to pot it in a real container soon. It's on my porch so the next time it blooms I can catch a whiff every time I walk by.

My jasmine had almost completely died. I buried a whole bunch of shrimp shells in the pot and brought it back to life. I've repotted it into a hanging basket so I could smell the blooms better but I'm not sure if it likes the new pot or if it's just adjusting.

My African violets and begonias are also on my porch, but I can save them for another post.

  1. Ooh, that jasmine looks so fragrant! As does your gardenia. Mine has completely gone on strike. There are buds, but they fall off before they bloom.

  2. Do you know, Jasmine, or locally, we call it sampaguita, blooms just about anywhere here in the Philippines? I love the desert rose!!!

  3. Nikki,
Three years and my gardenia never bloomed or turned green. The repotting and less sunny location finally did it. I do love the smell of both gardenias and jasmine though.

    Ning,
Lucky you! I love the smell of jasmine. Haha! I should have used the desert rose picture with my toes showing just so you could see my "cute" feet. :P
