Doughnut Bread Pudding

Updated from the archives March 15, 2009:

Doughnut Bread Pudding 1

There's a scene in Linda Howard's "To Die For" when Wyatt (who's a cop) makes Blair's recipe for Krispy Kreme doughnut bread pudding. The cops had been so nice to her after an attempted murderer cut her brake line that she decided to thank them with a different take on the stereotypical doughnuts.

Now, I don't have too much of a sweet tooth but it doesn't take much for a craving to take over my brain. Picture the scene with big, hunky Wyatt in the kitchen beating condensed milk and cinnamon, and pouring it over sugar-glazed doughnuts to bake, while an injured Blair sits on the side giving him directions. To top it off, even though it's a simple recipe and he now knows how to make it, he asks her to make it for him for his birthday each year -- thereby implying that he plans to be with her year after year. Awww.

Anyway, the recipe was included in the sequel, "Drop Dead Gorgeous." This is my variation.

Here, come a little closer. How 'bout a warm piece straight from the oven?

Adapted from Linda Howard's "To Die For" Doughnut Bread Pudding

For an 8-by-8-inch pan, you'll need:
6 sugar-glazed doughnuts (I used 3 twists.)
1/2 stick or 4 tblsps butter
1 egg
1/4 cup condensed milk
1 cup milk or soy milk
1 tsp cinnamon, or as much as you'd like
A few dashes of nutmeg
A dash of vanilla extract

For icing, you'll need:
2 tblsp maple syrup
1/2 cup powdered sugar

You'll need about half a dozen sugar-glazed doughnuts or about 3 twists.

Tear doughnuts into bite-sized chunks and put into a glass pie pan. Set aside.

In a bowl, melt butter. Beat in egg, 1/4 cup condensed milk, 1 tsp cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg, and a dash of vanilla extract. When mixture is thoroughly blended, drizzle over the doughnuts. Then pour 1 cup milk over doughnuts.

Bake in 350-degree oven for about half an hour or until doughnut bread pudding is golden and crispy.

Just look at the crispy topping and moist bottom.

If you need icing, pour about 2 tblsps maple syrup into 1/2 cup powdered sugar.

Doughnut Bread Pudding 8

I actually only do half that and just drizzle icing on top. Add more powdered sugar if you want a thicker consistency. There's already so much sugar in the doughnuts and the condensed milk that I tend to go a little easy on the icing.

Doughnut Bread Pudding 9

When mixture is smooth, pour icing over doughnut bread pudding.

Let's cut out a nice big slice for you.

Tell me that doesn't make you want to run out and make one right away.

So why the update? Well, just take a look at my original picture. Eek!

  1. (o_O)... Oh sweet lord....

Now I know how a mouse feels when he'd nose to nose with a snake. What a sexy, yet deadly, dish.

  6. Carmen,
My feed changed half a year ago. I made mention of it, but quite a few people missed that, I guess. Glad you're on board again.

    Jonathan,
I think I gained more from eating this! :P

    Trish,
You can make bread pudding out of any baked goods. Works great with pandan bread too.
