Shortly after the '88s and lil' sis graduated from college, the youngest cousin also graduated from high school. I totally forgot about his graduation ceremony, but a few cousins reminded me in time to join his family for dinner afterward at Ocean Star Seafood Restaurant in Monterey Park. And isn't that the best part anyway?
I've blogged Ocean Star's dim sum before, and had remarked that the old school seafood/dim sum restaurants mainly rested on their laurels. Nonetheless, for family gatherings, they're still pretty popular.
We started off with crab meat with fish maw soup. This was a 1 1/2 portion bowl so it'd be enough for the eight of us.
Nice savory crab and spongy fish maw pieces.
Peking duck, two styles.
We got the crispy duck skin with steamed buns.
My Peking duck wrap.
Honey walnut creamy shrimp. The "cream" is really mayonnaise.
French-style filet mignon beef with snow peas. Tender and delicious.
Then the Peking duck came back the second way -- chopped up and stir-fried to eat with lettuce leaves.
As I've mentioned before, I love Peking duck lettuce cups!
Chicken with spicy sauce. This was the weakest dish of the night. Kinda boring actually. The spicy sauce wasn't that flavorful, just some chile peppers. The broccoli was steamed on the side, not stir-fried with the chicken so it didn't pick up any of the flavors.
Sauteed string beans.
Tofu pudding for dessert.
All in all, a perfectly fine dinner at one of the large Chinese restaurant mainstays in the San Gabriel Valley. While nothing particularly exciting, it's large, accommodates big families, and is a good value. The dishes were all less than $10 with the exception of the Peking duck, which was around $25.
