Ask Wandering Chopsticks 10

UC Irvine Commencement

Congratulations to the two '88s and lil' sis who graduated from college this month! The youngest cousin graduated from high school too. I feel so old. I remember when they were all babies!

After the older '88's graduation, we went out for Korean barbecue at Seol Ak San - Stanton. It was my parents' and her parents' first time eating Korean barbecue and they quite liked it, especially the variety of panchan (Korean side dishes) and the kimchee fried rice at the end.

After dinner, we dropped my cousin off at her place in Newport Beach to finish packing. So fancy! A beach house! My first college apartment had mice and my second apartment's kitchen was a converted hallway closet. Doesn't she know college students are supposed to suffer a little?

Sunset. Lifeguard tower. Beach. Such a quintessential Southern California view.

Newport Beach

My parents strolled along the boardwalk for a bit with my youngest aunt and her husband. Meanwhile, I snapped photo after photo of my cousin with her arm akimbo and her hair waving in the breeze.

I don't know about you, but I like keeping the raw edges in my panoramic shots. Sort of like when I pasted together printed photographs in my albums. Back when people still printed photos anyway.

Newport Beach Panorama

Although, I must admit the cropped photo looks nice too.

The next day, we were off to lil' sis's graduation.

UC San Diego Commencement

I'm slowly trying to catch up. Ha! What else is new?

This month's weird search terms?

The craziest spelling for Vietnamese I've ever seen - "VEATNEMIES."

And, "
What is the difference between jambalaya and papaya?"

Bwah!!

Ha!

Ha!!!

Seriously?

Haha! Umm, one is a rice dish and the other is a fruit?

Anyway, got a recipe question? Restaurant question? Just want to say, "Hi?" Did you miss Ask Wandering Chopsticks 1? Or click on the "Ask Wandering Chopsticks" tag below for previous editions. Otherwise, what's on your mind? You have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, June 27.

  4. Congratulations on the graduation! Time flies when we are all getting older!
I made your kimchi the other day and it calls to me. Standing in front of the open fridge with chopsticks in hand is NOT dignified! But so satisfying! Yum....I can hardly wait to make some kimchi soup this week. Thanks for the recipe and, actually, all your recipes, I learn something every time I come here. :-)

sorry this q is late, but i saw a package of rice wrapper sheets that was pie shaped (like 1/4 of a circle). is there a special kind of vietnamese appetizer/dish that you would use that for? i've only used the circle ones.

lately, we've been eating Vietnamese chicken salad in rice wraps. eithat that or with those toasted sesame chips. yum!

Yes, as soon as I get organized.

    Liz,
Yup! I know! Are you blogging again?

    Kirk,
It did seem like only yesterday! She grew up too fast!

    Scotia,
Haha. I love that imagery. I haven't made my own kimchi in a while. Thanks for the reminder.

    CC,
Just personal preference. There are square-shaped rice paper too.
